What to pack for Ametista do Sul: a list for three days by coach
The trip to Ametista do Sul and Derrubadas is short and practical: three days, two nights, one hotel. That changes the packing: everything fits in a medium holdall, if you like. The secret is in the details: November in the north-west of Rio Grande do Sul, mine tours, a vehicle safari and the journey home with amethyst in your luggage.
This list applies to Novembro 2026: Ametista do Sul e Derrubadas and to any similar departure. The general version, for any coach trip, is on the Get ready page.
Clothes: November in the north-west of Rio Grande do Sul
The end of November is late spring: warm days, strong sun and cool evenings. The town sits at about 500 metres above sea level, and the air cools once the sun goes down. The rule is layers:
- Light shirts for the day (cotton, short sleeves)
- A long-sleeved top or light jacket for the evening and for the inside of the mines
- Comfortable trousers for travelling and sightseeing
- One more change of clothes than you need: three days is short, and the unexpected is common
- Hat or cap and sunglasses (the safari and the main square are in the open air)
- Pyjamas, socks and underwear, and slippers if you like them
Footwear: the most important item on the list
Here is the golden rule of the trip: closed shoes that are already broken in. The day in Ametista do Sul means stone ground, mine galleries and country streets, so trainers or low shoes with a firm sole will do. New, tight shoes are the classic mistake: bring a pair that has already been with you on other walks. A pair of light sandals is fine for the hotel and for relaxing in the evening, not for the tours.
Hand luggage: what you must not forget
- Regular medication for every day plus a few extra, with the prescription: no exceptions
- Original identity document, with a photo and in good condition
- Charged mobile phone and charger (the coach has a socket; travel groups run on WhatsApp)
- A change of clothes and the hygiene essentials, in case the checked suitcase is delayed
- Water and a snack for Friday morning (boarding is at 6.30am; anyone who has an early breakfast at home starts the day better)
- Spare glasses, if you wear them: forgetting your only pair 450 km from home is a real headache
Items that make a difference on this particular trip
- Camera or phone with free space: the amethyst church, the Yucumã and the mines give you the best photos of the season
- Cash or card for shopping: the stones you bring back may cost less than you plan for (there is an article on this: buying amethyst in Ametista do Sul)
- A bag or piece of fabric in your suitcase for the stones: the points of the druses (crystal clusters) travel better wrapped in clothing
- Sun cream: the safari is in an open vehicle on some stretches, and the spring weather in Rio Grande do Sul can be deceptive
Helmets and the like: what you do NOT need to bring
The equipment for the tours is provided on site: helmets for the mines, park vehicles for the safari, a lift in the church tower. Do not bring torches or hiking boots: the trip is comfort with moderate adventure.
And the suitcase for the return?
Always bigger. Keep a third of the space in your suitcase for purchases: even people who swear they are "only going to look" come back with a druse. For larger pieces, the shop sends them by carrier: arrange this when you buy.
Frequently asked questions
How many bags can I take on the coach trip?
One checked suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per person cover the three days comfortably. Do you need more room for a large piece? Message us on WhatsApp beforehand and we will arrange the transport.
Is it cold in Ametista do Sul in November?
During the day it is warm, like spring; in the evening it cools down. Layers cope with both, and the inside of the mines has a constant temperature, pleasant with a light top.
Do I need boots to go into the mine?
No. Closed, comfortable shoes are enough; the corridors are wide and the route is done in an adapted vehicle, with a helmet provided.
Where can I check the general list of documents and health items?
On the Get ready page and in the article on travelling after 60, which details medication, documents and how we look after the group. Have a specific question? Message us on WhatsApp before you pack: that conversation is free.
Bags packed, ready to board
