Faced with so much social turbulence and alarming news, it is easy to lose heart and imagine that humanity is going backwards. Yet, in analysing the Law of Progress in the third part of O Livro dos Espíritos (The Spirits' Book), Allan Kardec opens up a broad and deeply optimistic historical view: progress is a natural and irrevocable law of divine creation, and good will infallibly overcome selfishness.

For Spiritist philosophy, human evolution unfolds in two complementary dimensions: first intellectual and technical progress, which masters material forces, and then moral progress, which teaches humanity to use that power for the good of all.

Progress is individual and collective

Collective progress is nothing more than the sum of the individual progress of the souls that make up society. Through successive reincarnations, spirits absorb lessons, refine their emotions and overcome archaic prejudices.

Although there may be apparent pauses and passing setbacks in the history of nations, humanity never returns to a state of primitive barbarism. Each generation inherits the moral and scientific achievements of earlier civilisations, paving the way for fairer and more caring institutions.

Education as the supreme lever

Kardec, who was an eminent educator and a direct disciple of Pestalozzi in Switzerland, stresses that true civilisation is measured not by the luxury of palaces, the grandeur of monuments or the sophistication of machines, but by the moral standing of its inhabitants and by the way it welcomes the most vulnerable.

The lever capable of speeding the march of progress is integral moral education: the kind that shapes character, teaches respect for the rights of others and builds the habit of doing good spontaneously.

The horizon of the Earth of Regeneration

Spiritism explains that planet Earth is in a period of evolutionary transition, gradually leaving behind its condition as a world of trials and expiation to reach the stage of a world of regeneration, where solidarity and peace will overcome violence and iniquity.

Cultivating optimism, spreading kindness and supporting peace initiatives are concrete ways of actively contributing to this planetary transformation.
