A Spiritist caravan (caravana espírita) is the name given to a group trip, almost always by coach, to places linked to the history of Spiritism in Brazil. Some people call it a spiritual caravan, a Spiritist pilgrimage (romaria espírita) or a Spiritist route (rota espírita). It is all the same thing: a group leaves together, with a guide, and spends a few days between Uberaba, Sacramento and Araxá, in the Triângulo Mineiro, where Chico Xavier and Eurípedes Barsanulfo lived.
Mundo a Passeio has been running this caravan from Porto Alegre for seven years. This page answers the questions we receive most often on WhatsApp from people who have never been.
Do you need to be Spiritist to go?
No. On every departure there are Spiritist, Catholic and Evangelical travellers, and people who follow no religion at all. Some go for their faith, others for the history, and many go because they have lost someone and want to see the place that so many letters of consolation came from. What is asked is respect in the meeting places, modest clothing and silence when the moment calls for it. No one is asked to change their beliefs.
Where does the Mundo a Passeio Spiritist caravan go?
The classic itinerary has four cities, all in the Triângulo Mineiro:
- Uberaba, where Chico Xavier lived from 1959 until his death in 2002. It is the city of the Memorial Chico Xavier, the house where he lived and the Grupo Espírita da Prece, where he received the public.
- Sacramento, the city of Eurípedes Barsanulfo, who founded the Colégio Allan Kardec there in the early 20th century.
- Araxá, the city of waters, with the Grande Hotel and the Parque do Barreiro. It is included in the itinerary as a rest between visits.
- Conquista, a small town between Uberaba and Sacramento, which is part of the caravan's route.
What is visited in each place, with address and opening hours, is in our Chico Xavier in Uberaba itinerary. The description of the trip, with dates, is at Spiritist caravan from Porto Alegre.
What is the daily routine of a Spiritist caravan like?
Departure is from Porto Alegre, by leito (sleeper) or semi-leito (semi-sleeper) coach, and the journey to Uberaba is a full night on the road, with meal stops, arriving the next day. On arrival, the group stays at a hotel and the coach handles each day's transfers. To give an idea of scale, the Minas Espírita caravan of July 2026 left on the 15th and returned on the 22nd: eight days, four cities.
The day starts early. Mornings and afternoons are for visits, usually two or three a day, with lunch in between. In the evening, when there is an open public meeting, the group may take part. Between one thing and another there is time to walk, buy a book, have a coffee and talk. Nobody travels to rush.
Ana Carla and Cinara travel with the group from the first day to the last. Ana Carla is a tour guide registered with the Ministry of Tourism's Cadastur.
Who usually travels on a Spiritist caravan?
Most travellers are over sixty. Couples, groups of friends, mothers with adult daughters and many people travelling alone come along, and by the second day they are no longer alone. Those who have been tell how it went in What our travellers say, and photos from the latest departures are in how the July 2026 caravan went and in how the Rota Espírita of April 2026 went.
What to bring
Comfortable, modest clothing, a jumper or jacket (Minas gets cold at night, even in summer), closed, soft shoes for walking, regular medication with the prescription, original photo ID and a small bag for the day. Anyone who wants to bring a letter or a photo to leave at one of the places may do so. The full list is at get ready for your trip.
When is the next caravan
Departures to the Triângulo Mineiro take place more than once a year. The next is November 2026, which combines the Triângulo Mineiro with the waters of Caldas Novas. After it come the 2027 departures, which appear in all trips as soon as the dates are settled.
