Mediumship meeting: what to expect the first time
On the second day of our November expedition, at 5pm, the group takes part in a mediumship meeting at the community of Santa Maria, in Conquista (MG). Every year the same scene repeats on the coach: someone comes over and confesses, almost in a whisper, "Ana Carla, I've never been to one of these. What is going to happen?"
It is the fairest question in the world, and this text exists to answer it calmly, without mystery and without hurry. Let's begin.
What a mediumship meeting is
According to Spiritist doctrine, the mediumship meeting is a gathering of workers who exercise mediumship in an assisted way. It helps to distinguish at once the two doors that exist in a Spiritist house:
- The public meeting is expository and open: a talk, a passe (a Spiritist practice of laying on of hands), a Gospel reading. Anyone can come in, take part and leave.
- The mediumship meeting is the inner work, the mediumistic service itself. For that reason, as a rule, participation is restricted to mediums and prepared workers.
And where does our caravan fit in? The session the group attends is open to our group in the form the host centre organises, with passes, a talk and psychographies (messages written through a medium) for the group. In other words: you are not "intruding" on a closed work; you are being welcomed by those who invited you.
The order of a mediumship meeting
The usual order follows a sequence that we can go through step by step:
- Brief preparatory reading: a short text to gather attention.
- Opening prayer: the formal opening of the work.
- Study: reading and commentary on a doctrinal passage.
- Communications: the moment when, according to the doctrine, spirits communicate through the mediums. I repeat the usual honesty: this is what the Spiritist faith teaches; we describe it with respect, without presenting it as proven fact.
- Irradiations: prayers directed at people and situations.
- Closing prayer: the close of the work.
In the caravan's session, the host centre organises the programme for the group: passes, a talk and psychographies. Each house has its own way, and we follow the rhythm of those who receive us.
The honest questions of first-timers
They are always the same, and they are great ones. I will answer them one by one.
Can I go without being a Spiritist?
Yes. The caravan's session is organised for our group, and it brings together people from all paths. What we ask is the same as in anyone else's house: respect. You can pray, you can simply observe in silence, you can receive the passe or just stay seated. No one is obliged to do anything.
What should I wear?
Simple, discreet clothes, comfortable for sitting for a while. Nothing special is needed: what you would wear for a quiet visit will do.
Can I arrive late?
Better not. We leave the hotel with time to spare precisely so that we arrive before the start. The meeting begins with the opening prayer, and coming in afterwards interrupts everyone's recollection. In the itinerary, the time is 5pm on the second day, and we remind the group all day long.
Can I cry?
Yes, you can. Emotion is not bad manners: it is human. People who take part for the first time often feel a tightness in the chest at some point, and that is fine. Cry quietly, breathe deeply. If you need to step out for a moment, tell someone on the team and leave calmly.
Can I film or take photographs?
No. It is a moment of recollection, not of recording. Keep your phone on silent (or switched off) and put away in your bag. What happens there, each person carries in memory, and, honestly, that is the best place to keep it.
How we prepare the group beforehand
We do not leave anyone in the dark. Before the session, the team gathers the group and explains the order of the meeting, the agreed ground rules and what to expect. It is the same spirit as this text, but in person. If you would like to get ahead, you can read how to behave in a Spiritist house and, to get a feel for the atmosphere, our account of how the Minas espírita trip went in July 2026. It is also worth checking the tips on our trip preparation page.
