Porto Alegre has dozens of coach excursions advertised every week, on bakery noticeboards, in WhatsApp groups and on social media. Some come from agencies with years on the road, others from private individuals who put a group together and hire a coach. Before booking, it is worth checking seven things. It is what we would do if we were on the other side of the counter.
1. Does the agency have Cadastur?
Cadastur is the Ministry of Tourism's registry. Travel agencies and tour guides must have a number there, and the search is public at cadastur.turismo.gov.br. Without Cadastur, whoever sells the trip cannot be held to account as a tourism service provider. Our guide Ana Carla's Cadastur number is in the footer of every page and on the about Mundo a Passeio page.
What should be included in writing on a coach excursion?
Coach, hotel, how many nights, which meals, tickets, local guide, insurance. Anything that is not written down counts as not included. Ask for the trip description before paying the deposit and keep it. On our trip pages every item is listed, and the contract repeats the list.
How can you tell whether a coach excursion has a confirmed date?
A reputable excursion has departure and return dates before it goes on sale. When the date has not been confirmed yet, this should be stated. Be wary of "departing soon" with no month set.
What type of coach should you check before booking an excursion?
Executivo (executive), semi-leito (semi-sleeper) or leito (full sleeper) makes all the difference on a long trip. We explain the difference in leito, semi-leito or executivo coaches. Also ask whether the coach is chartered from a company registered with the ANTT, the agency that regulates road transport.
Is it important for someone from the agency to accompany the group on the excursion?
One thing is for the driver to drop the group at the hotel and come back at the end of the week. Another is to have someone from the agency with the group from start to finish. On our departures Ana Carla and Cinara travel with the group and stay until the return.
6. Where is the boarding point
Ask for the exact boarding point and time. Some trips leave in the early hours. If you live in the metropolitan area, ask whether there is a stop on the way.
7. What passengers say
A review on the agency's own page is easy to write. Look for a name, the trip and the date. Ours are at What our travellers say, with the name of whoever wrote each one and the trip they took, and the photos of each group are in the gallery and in the posts about how each departure went.
