Human diversity is immense: we are born into different cultures, we have varied aptitudes and we live unequal socioeconomic realities. In reflecting on these questions in the Law of Equality in O Livro dos Espiritos (The Spirits' Book), Allan Kardec offers a mature, fraternal and transformative view of the meaning of justice and the distribution of opportunities in society.
For Spiritist philosophy, all human beings are children of the same Creator, created simple and ignorant, endowed with the same fundamental dignity and destined for the same infinite progress.
Natural equality and diversity of aptitudes
Kardec asks why God did not give all human beings the same intellectual capacities and practical skills. The answer is admirable: the variety of aptitudes is indispensable so that people need one another. In a society where everyone knew and did exactly the same, isolation would prevail; in the difference of talents, cooperation, commerce, art and mutual support are born.
Inequality of social positions, however, is not a law of God but a human creation resulting from selfishness and historical privileges, which the progress of civil law has the duty to ease.
The responsibility of using resources
Spiritist ethics neither condemns the possession of material goods nor exalts poverty as a virtue. Financial resources are seen as a neutral instrument of work: the merit or the harm lies in the use made of them.
Those who have resources are called to act as conscientious stewards, creating decent jobs, promoting education, supporting cultural initiatives and helping those in need without humiliating them. Wealth thus becomes a test of responsibility and fraternity.
The emancipation and equality of women
One of the most advanced passages in Kardec's work, published in 1857, is its categorical defence of absolute equality of rights between men and women. The author states that the soul has no definitive biological sex and that women have equal rights before the law and society, condemning their historical subjection as an abuse of male strength.
